As I’m sure you’ve heard… David Bowie passed at the age of 69.

For many this was a non-event. Many don’t know who he was or what he meant to rock music, to film and to pop culture. David Bowie was first and foremost, a rock star. He also did films and became involved, almost a spokesperson for sexual liberation. Not a shock that he worked with Freddie Mercury and Queen to record “Under Pressure.”

I was fortunate to see David Bowie and it was a fantastic concert. Funny thing… I almost didn’t go.

He was in the midst of the Glass Spider Tour and he played the Marcus Amphitheater in Milwaukee. A friend asked if I was interested in seeing the show. I said “yes” at the time, but when the day rolled around to go I was not psyched. I spoke to a mutual friend about going and her words were “Tommy is really excited to see this show with you.” So, I went… and it was great!

I had a different appreciation for David Bowie’s music after that. Before, I viewed Ziggy Stardust as a gimmick and something a less talented artist used to get people to listen to his music. What a fool. I didn’t see the why he was just presenting his “art” in a different format. David Bowie did this often including the release of his last album just days before he passed. A showman to the end.

In the Wisconsin State Journal there was a review from Bowie’s 1974 concert at the Coliseum. The writer seemed skeptical and uninterested when the show was coming. He too came away impressed and a fan. I guess Ziggy had that power.
