photo of the internal iMacHard drive replacement is more like surgery

So I got involved with helping a close friend with her computer. She needed more storage and I figured I could help out by replacing the existing 1 TB hard drive in her iMac with a new, 2 TB drive. For about $100 the 2009 machine that has nothing wrong it with now becomes serviceable for another few years.

Easier said than done

The replacement of the hard drive in an iMac is along the lines of surgery when it comes to the need for a steady hand. Lots of things to disassemble and remove from the machine just to get down to the hard drive. Then again, sometimes a bit of a challenge is a good thing.

I completed the upgrade just fine, but hit a few bumps in the road along the way. Mostly having to do with the temperature sensor as this was something that I hadn’t expected and needed to spend a couple of hours doing research before I was finally able to kick the problem’s ass. I think this means my patient’s heart stopped a time or two and we had to use the zappers to bring her back to life, but in the end… all good.

Really nice job engineering the computer and fitting everything into the monitor/case. Very industrial look and feel with it’s minimalist design and clean lines. That said, would it kill you to make the things a little easier to work on? : )
