Rare photo shows original suckas after the Trek 100 Team Event

I don’t know if it’s a good thing or not, but earlier this week a “friend” sent me a picture of our team at the finish line of the first Trek 100 that we ever rode in. I believe we’ve done 4 or 5 since that time, but this was the special one, the very first one.

I believe we’re looking at 1988-89 so we’re approaching the 25th anniversary of the ride. I remember riding with a bag on the front of my bike, a Schwinn lead filled model, and the bag was filled with tools. I’m sure that added 5 pounds to my already ridiculously heavy bike.

Then of course there was the little dust-up (a person in a car ran over a cyclist right in front of me)  in mile 99 that put a couple of the team members down, but couldn’t take us out. Quite a memorable ride.

In the feature photo you can see Chris Smith, Kevin Smith, myself (Dane) and Gregg Smith. Gregg has since east and is managing some bike shops in the Boston area. Chris, Kevin and I still live and with Kevin and I still riding locally for Team 2S1B.

To the right you can see the Schwinn Le Tour that I rode in the Trek. A really nice lead filled frame for extra weight. What a bike!

As they say at REI… Never a bad time to ride!
