As a regular reader of the Bike Federation of Wisconsin’s blog I come across some pretty cool articles. Checking it out today I read about guys riding their “fat bikes” on the beaches around Bayfield, WI and exploring, when legal, the ice caves in the area.

I don’t know that you absolutely have to have a fat bike to ride this type of terrain. I’ve ridden across Lake Monona before on my mountain bike and didn’t have an issue with ice. I did have studded tires, but I’m not 100% sure they help. I’m more of a believer in good balance and riding smart (no sudden or sharp movements which will cause loss of traction).

Bottom Line: This is a pretty frickin’ cool ride! Possibly, a once in a lifetime ride.

Thanks to the Polar Vortex, for the first time since 2009, the ice around the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore has been thick enough for people to visit the amazing sea caves. Bad news first: it is not legal to ride your bike within 1/4 mile of the caves in the park.
