It appears there is a new “Well” in town

What does this mean? It means that there is a guy on planet Earth that can really put them away.

Who is “the Well?”

Good question. “The Well” is the man with the given name David W. Bushee. Actually, I don’t know if “W” is his actual middle initial, but when asked his full name by University Police back in the late 80s, David proudly (and very drunkenly) responded “David W. Bushee. I’m the Well and you’re all wishing wells!” Why was Dave being questioned by University Police? Things got a little out of hand at a Sam Kinison concert at the Memorial Union Theatre. To make a long story short, Dave was hammered. He blew a .32 into the breathalyzer at the station. Once released, he headed to the Shuffle Inn and continued to drink.

So where does the nickname “The Well” come from. According to Dave the “W” in David W. Bushee stands for “well” as in he is the unstoppable drinking well. Dave believed he could drink more than anyone else and honestly, he may have been right. In my 20 years of tending bar I saw some pretty big drinkers and Dave was definitely in my top 4.

The new Well?

You may be aware that Dave passed away a couple of years back. That said, can someone really take his drinking title away from him? I don’t know what the rules are, but it seems we have a challenger to “The Well” title. As reported by the Smoking Gun a Mr. Clark from Iowa blew.486 and when a blood test was administered he measured .627. Almost 8 times the legal limit in Iowa. Yikes!
