Jan 20, 1984 – Metallica releases the single “Jump In The Fire”

Originally, Jump in the Fire was the title track of an EP that Metallica released. Since it was released in an extremely limited run Jump in the Fire was added to Metallica’s 1983 album, Kill’em All.

Jump in the Fire is a good song, but I think the most memorable thing about it is the red-skinned demonic creature on the cover. Believe it or not there was actually a toy company who made action figure out of the demon and sold them, online only, for $99. Crazy!

Why Write About Jump in the Fire?

Why am I writing about Jump in the Fire? Three good reasons:

  1. Jump in the Fire was released 32 years and it still kicks ass!
  2. In the last month 3 major rock stars have passed away: Lemmy Kilmister, David Bowie and Glenn Frey. I needed to write about something positive
  3. The demon guy from the cover… c’mon man, he’s awesome

At that point in time Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney were members of the band. Eventually Mustaine was fired because of his drug and alcohol issue. McGovney, while a childhood friend of James Hetfield never actually recorded with them. He was a founding member until they actually got started. Enter Kirk Hammett and Cliff Burton… and Metallica is born.

Long Live Metal!
