Is it too little, too late?

The hockey Badgers really brought it last night in the 2nd game of their home series with Michigan. They lost Friday night’s game 4-1 with the lone bright spot being a Ryan Wagner goal, but Saturday was a completely different story.

Saturday night’s game ended in a 4-4 tie, but it was one heck of a game. Every time Michigan scored, Bucky answered. The game tying goal came from the Badgers leading goal scorer, Luke Kunin, with 12 seconds left in the period. Clutch goal and an even better assist by Cameron Hughes.

The Breakdown

I was completely impressed with the effort they gave on Saturday night. There was a stretch midway through the 2nd period where they struggled, but aside from that a good solid 50 minutes of great hockey.

Obviously I love Kunin’s ability to put the puck in the net. He had a pair of goals in game 2 and none bigger than his game tying tally. Grant Besse is really asserting himself and Ryan Wagner has picked things up as well.

Cam Hughes is turning into quite the playmaker as evidenced by his 13 assists (3rd on the team). Great stick handling and pass on the game tying goal.

I like to see the guys being physical too. Eddie Wittchow had another big hit on a guy that was in the crease making life difficult for Matt Jurusik. Wittchow did incur a 2 minute penalty for elbowing and I was pretty sure he was going to leave the game for contact to the head. Very close, but really liked Wittchow making guys fearful when they’re around the net.

Some of the guys that I don’t know as well that had good games last night: Freytag, Davison, Johnson and Corbin McGuire. He’s really playing well as a converted defensemen. Seems like a good additional back there as he can move the put well. A guy who is always in the thick of things is Tischke. I have to see more of him to determine how to rate him. Energy guy for sure.

The one guy I can’t stand on the team is Jake Linhart. Every time there is an opposing skater roaming free it appears that Linhart is the guy that just isn’t putting a body on him or is missing an assignment. Not a fan at all.

The future

The young Badgers are improving. They really played well last night against a really good opponent. I was fired up. It’s unfortunate that time will run out on Coach Mike Eaves. The Badgers are in the midst of their worst couple of seasons ever. If they had one more scorer and a little more time I think he could survive this rough patch. There is definitely got some quality players on the roster now and they’re showing on the ice as well. Just too little, too late.
